Can I tell you about my favourite material?

Today, I want to tell you about the most wonderful of media.

Actually it’s my personal favourite.

Ta da…….let’s welcome: “Pen, Ink and Watercolour” ….catchy isn’t it?!

Let me introduce you to all its best characteristics (well there aren’t any downsides really!)…

  1. It is THE most versatile of mediums: It’s the best of drawing and painting combined
  2. It's a great confidence builder, if you are unsure in drawing or in painting, these two materials go hand in hand and help each other along.
  3. You can create shapes in pen, then create lovely washes of colour with watercolour. It takes the pressure off just  ‘drawing’ or just ‘painting’ . You can use the drawn shapes as a structure in which to paint.
  4. You can depict ANYTHING in this medium…..architecture, people, landscape, flowers, still-life: the choice is yours.
  5. The best pen to use (well my personal fave) is a ‘Dippy Pen’ aka old fashioned nip pen and liquid ink from a bottle. You can use a biro or any other pen but make sure it’s waterproof so it works well with watercolour.
  6. The ink pen is a marvel in itself…. the pressure you push onto the paper determines how thick or thin your line is. So if you push harder, your line is thicker, because the nip splits further apart and lets more ink through. Whereas if you're just using a very light touch, you'll make a very delicate mark with your pen.
  7. The liquid ink is special because you can draw with it ….but you can also use it to to paint with a brush if you want to make thicker lines or block out dramatic backgrounds.
  8. You can use your watercolour as much or as little as you want. If you love watercolour, you can really go to town with your layers….or you can simply create a delicate wash or a quick splash of colour. It’s up to you and both approaches create amazing results.
  9. You can choose to use fabulous bright colour or stick to monochrome to pick up on highlights and shadows. The pen does the talking and the watercolour just helps it along.
  10. It's a very free and easy medium to use. Equally it can be extremely precise and detailed. Take it whichever way you like.

Now, if you’d like to give it a try…. I just launched a brand new FREE course on pen and watercolour flowers. Click here to start.
