Discover Raoul Dufy: Colour, Light and a Joyful Way to Paint
As we move into spring, I always find myself drawn to artists who bring a real sense of lightness and joy to their work… and one of my absolute favourites for that is Raoul Dufy.
If you’re not familiar with him yet, you’re in for a treat.
Dufy was a French painter known for his bright colours, loose lines and wonderfully carefree style. His work often captures seaside scenes, music, gardens and bustling social life – all full of movement and energy. There’s something about his paintings that just feels happy… like a warm, sunny day by the coast.
A few fun things about Dufy:
- He originally trained in a much darker, more traditional style before discovering colour in a big way
- He was inspired by the Fauvist movement (think bold, unexpected colour choices!)
- He even designed fabrics for fashion houses – so his creativity wasn’t limited to canvas
- His paintings often look spontaneous and loose, but they’re beautifully balanced
What I love most is that his work reminds us that art doesn’t have to be perfect or overly detailed to be powerful. It can be expressive, playful and full of life.
And that’s exactly what we’ll be exploring in my next Create! Art Hub Artist Workshop.

In this session, we’ll be creating bright, joyful artwork inspired by Dufy using watercolour pencils – a really lovely, versatile medium that’s perfect for building colour and softness.
This workshop is designed to be relaxed and enjoyable, whether you’re fairly new to art or already building confidence. I’ll guide you step-by-step, so you can explore colour, loosen your style, and enjoy the process.
