Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter who is considered one of the most important figures in the development of these two movements. He was born in St. Thomas, Danish West Indies, in 1830, and moved to France in 1855. He was a close friend and mentor to many other Impressionist painters, including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Vincent van Gogh.

Here are 5 top facts about the artist Pissarro:

  1. He was the only artist to exhibit in all eight of the Impressionist exhibitions.
  2. He was a master of light and colour, and his paintings are known for their vibrant hues and atmospheric effects.
  3. He was also an accomplished printmaker, and his woodcuts and etchings are highly prized by collectors.
  4. He was a lifelong learner, and he was always experimenting with new techniques and styles.
  5. He was a mentor to many younger artists, including Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.

If you're interested in learning more about Pissarro's work and techniques, I recommend taking my online art workshop, "Pissarro in oil pastels."  This is on Thursday 20th July for 2 hours.

In this workshop, you'll learn how to capture the light and atmosphere of Pissarro's paintings, as well as how to use his signature brushstrokes and colour palette. You'll also learn about the history of Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, and how these movements influenced Pissarro's work…. PLUS after the 2 hours have created a piece of artwork to be proud off 😊.

This is a live ON-LINE workshop which you can do in the comfort of your own home, and the video will be available for 2 weeks afterwards. This class lasts for 2 hours and costs just £15.  You can book via my website HERE.

Oil pastels are fab! They are sticks which of colour mixed with non-drying oil and wax. They give a painty texture and can be applied thickly in layers. My Recommendation: A box of at least 12 colours of oil pastels, Pentel is a good affordable brand. Make sure you have at least one stick of white (to mix colours together).  Here’s a link to a low cost starter pack from Amazon.
